SMALL CIRCLE, BIG HEARTS Silver Creek Central School District recently humbly accepted a generous and meaningful donation from an alumni. This beautiful class ring belonged to Class of 1946 graduate Patricia Ann Kuell. She later married and became Patricia Sherman. Her son, Douglas Sherman, found this item of jewelry and neat piece of history – and graciously offered it to the district. We placed a photo of Mrs. Sherman and her meaningful ring on display in our lobby so our Black Knight family can admire and appreciate it. SCCS Senior Tesa Karcz recently joined selected Western New York Senior High Musicians as a part of the Area All-State Senior High Orchestra. Tesa completed an audition last spring and was selected for the ensemble based on their excellent performance. The concert included works by Rimsky-Korsakov, Tchaikovsky, and Gliere.

Parent Broadcast 12/1/21 Please be advised that this week we have had 1 high school staff, 2 buildings and grounds staff, 1 high school student, and 2 elementary students test positive for COVID. The Chautauqua County Department of Health has been notified and is taking further steps to contact trace as needed. The local department of health has or will identify and contact those identified as close contacts of the individuals. We are working with the health department and are taking all recommended steps to ensure the safety of our students and staff. Rest assured, these individuals will not return until they have completed quarantine/isolation procedures for COVID-19 as directed by the local Department of Health. We once again remind everyone do their part both inside and outside of school to stop the spread of the virus. I encourage everyone to monitor symptoms, stay home if you’re showing any symptoms, and stringently follow social distancing, face mask, and hand washing protocols in and out of school. Silver Creek CSD held their National Honor Society Induction Ceremony on Monday, November 22. Immediately following the ceremony, students and their families were invited to a banquet at The Fireman's Club catered by Brunner's Bayside Catering to celebrate and honor all of the inductees. Congratulations!

Silver Creek Central School District is seeking a ELA TEACHER LONG-TERM SUBSTITUTE (GRADES 7-12). The position is anticipated to begin December 20, 2021, and extend through April 8, 2022. Position: Long-term Substitute in NYS Certified English Language Arts ( Grades 7-12), specifically in the High School. Duties & Desired Qualifications: Provide direct instruction in ELA 9, ELA 10, ELA 11 and AIS. Establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects. Utilization of a variety of instructional techniques consistent with ELA learning standards. Ability to create a positive classroom environment that is conducive to student achievement. Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law and district policy. Must be able to effectively communicate with parents, and complete assessments and reporting as appropriate. The SCCS fourth graders were able to enjoy a virtual field trip through the Rochester Museum & Science Center. They visited with several Haudenosaunee artists who shared information about wampum, wood carving, corn husk dolls, storytelling, longhouse life, quillwork and basket making. They were able to speak to the artists for some Q&A, as well as see and listen to many of the beautiful displays. This visit was well timed as the fourth graders are just wrapping up their first ELA module on the Haudenosaunee.

The Silver Creek Elementary students and staff have been working hard to create feathers for a school community art installation. This lesson focused on mural artist Kelsey Montague and was developed to celebrate our students and staff. Each grade level worked with a specific color of the rainbow and staff used all the rainbow colors in their feathers. Art teacher, Lisa Anderson, then assembled the feathers to create a set of wings. The wings are displayed in the hallway for students and staff to interact with and become part of the artwork. Pictured is Mrs. Anderson and first grade student, Lauren Mahaney.

On Friday, November 19, Mrs. Laurenzi-Timmerman's 2nd period English 11 Honors class did a reenactment of Shakespeare's Hamlet. The class has been studying the text for the last month, and their final project was to create a 15–20-minute reenactment that made this story relatable to a modern-day audience. The students cast the show, directed it, and wrote the script. They then performed their reenactment for a small audience of staff members and peers. Mrs. Laurenzi-Timmerman is so proud of her students!

SC Kiwanis Club is hosting their annual Christmas in the Park event on Saturday, December 4 from noon to 3pm. Stop by The Backline to have a photo with Santa, meet Comet the reindeer, and support the local food pantry by purchasing baked goods and hot chocolate! All unvaccinated individuals must be masked indoors.

We are pleased to share that the Board of Education appointed Ms. Bethany Brown as our next Middle School Principal starting on or about January 3, 2022. After a thorough and comprehensive interview process it is clear that Ms. Brown’s experience will allow her to take over and keep our Middle School moving forward as we transition leaders during the middle of this school year. Ms. Brown has eight years of teaching experience; two at the elementary level and six at Spencerport Middle School. She has received her National Board Certification in middle school education. She has served as a vice principal for one year, elementary principal for three years, and is currently finishing her seventh year as a middle school principal, most recently for Buffalo City Schools. I am confident Ms. Brown will prove to be a talented, knowledgeable, insightful and hardworking leader for OUR Middle School for years to come. She is student centered and passionate to lead the Middle School as we continue to maneuver through COVID learning while assisting students not just academically but also socially, emotionally and mentally. I am certain Ms. Brown will have a few meet and greet sessions when she begins her appointment, providing an opportunity for you to meet her if you desire. Congratulations to Silver Creek High students GRACE RUTTENBUR, ALEXANDRA ROCQUE and JONATHAN NEWTON on being inducted into the National Technical Honor Society via Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus-BOCES! 🙌🕯🎉 These top Black Knights were feted recently (Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2021) for their academic achievements during a ceremony held in the auditorium at Lake Shore Central High School. Grace is a culinary student 👩‍🍳🍽, Alexandra is a cosmetology student 💇‍♀️💅 and Jonathan studies information technology 👨‍💻📲 via the Career & Technical Education division at the Carrier Education Center in Angola. Additionally, Alexandra serves as secretary of the NTHS and presented its motto at the ceremony. Well done, Black Knights! 👏🖤 💛

COLLECTING FOR THE COMMUNITY Silver Creek High’s chapter of the National Honor Society is facilitating a CAN AND CLOTHING DRIVE to help our Black Knight give back to the community this holiday season. Our students are asked to donate any non-perishable food items and any new-to-slightly used clothing (shirts, pants, hats, scarves, shoes) in any size from Monday, November 15, 2021, through Monday, December 6, 2021. Each class has a different location to donate food: 9th grade: Miss Zells or Mr. Pulver's rooms 10th grade: Mr. Bratcher's room 11th grade: Mrs. Laurenzi's room 12th grade: Miss Foley's room All clothing should be donated in Mr. Colson's room. Mrs. Weiss’ and Mrs. Williams’ third grade classes celebrated reading success in the first marking period. A ceremony was held to honor the students who have moved up an IRLA level this quarter. Students loved cheering for their friends as they received their certificates.
