The Silver Creek Central School District is committed to providing a school environment that promotes and protects children's health, well-being, and the ability to learn by fostering healthy eating and physical activity.
Note: The School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) is formerly known as the Wellness Committee.
The District has established a wellness committee to develop the District's proposed local wellness policy, making such policy recommendations for review and adoption by the Board of Education. The District Wellness Committee includes, but is not limited to, representatives from each of the following groups:
a) Parents;
b) Students;
c) Physical Education teachers;
d) School health professionals;
e) The District's food service program;
f) The School Board;
g) School administrators; and
h) Members of the public.
The Wellness Committee will also be responsible for assessing current activities, programs and policies available in the District, and providing mechanisms for implementation, evaluation, and revision of the policy. In so doing, the Wellness Committee will evaluate and make recommendations which reflect the specific needs of the District and its students.
Starting in the school year 2014-2015, all foods sold at school during the school day will need to meet nutrition standards. The Smart Snacks in School regulation applies to foods sold ala carte, in the school store, and vending machines. Prior to the publishing of the Smart Snacks rule, 39 states already had nutrition standards in place." -- United States Department of Agriculture/Food and Nutrition Service
