Silver Creek Central School District is spotlighting its Board of Education members during School Board Recognition Week (Oct. 18-22, 2021)! Next up is member MARJORIE FOXTON, who has served as a dedicated volunteer for our Black Knight family since joining the board in 2002. She is a Black Knight through and through – most of her life has been spent as a student, teacher or volunteer for our district – and wants to emphasize the importance of the values of board members. “I’m invested -- along with the total board – in helping make our school so successful in a number of ways,” says Foxton. She says that as a child she was “totally educated” by the Silver Creek Central School District and loved her teachers. She credits her experience as a Black Knight student for inspiring her to pursue education as a career. “Then I felt I would love to be a part in helping our school and students to use the skills I had been educated with so I could share them with every student I would have in class,” says Foxton. “I was so blessed with the professors I had at Fredonia College. They trained us to be positive with our students and help the students to use love when dealing with each other.” For anyone in the community curious about pursuing school board candidacy, Foxton has some gentle insight: “If you have an interest in education and how important it is in childrens’ lives, then you will bring the values to help every family, student and the total school to develop the positives so needed in our country today,” she says. “You would be a blessing.” Silver Creek CSD is grateful for Mrs. Foxton’s service to our students and community. Silver Creek Central School District's Quiz Bowl team competed yesterday (Oct. 20, 2021) at Jamestown Community College and won 36-33 in a close match against Randolph Central School District that came down to the second. Captain Karissa Buchanan led the team along with Isabella Daniels and Michael Dispenza. The team returns to JCC on Wednesday, November 10, 2021, for a next match against Southwestern Central School District! The Silver Creek team is coached by Jessica Kardashian and Caitlin Wojciechowski. The match can be heard Saturday, Nov. 20, 2021 at 11:30 a.m. on WJTN 1240 AM and 101.3 FM radio.

Next up is President STEPHEN BOOTHE, who has spent the past 8 years as a dedicated volunteer for our Black Knight family after being elected to the board in 2013. Here’s a little more about him: He moved to Silver Creek in 1995. He and his wife of 25 years have four children, all of whom attended SCCS. Three have graduated but one is currently attending high school. “We love Silver Creek and what the district has done for our children,” says Boothe. Mr. Boothe believes education is the prerequisite to success, which allows one to give back to others in the community. “My wish is for all the children of this district to get the education they need and one that will prepare them for their future,” says Boothe. LEARNING, SUPPORTING & INSPIRING For those interested in running, being a school board member requires a commitment of time and effort. The board has bi-weekly public meetings and there are also committee meetings that take place from time to time. “During the budget development process we have occasional weekend meetings,” says Boothe. “I believe most people would be surprised how long it takes to put together a school budget and how much work is involved.” Attending professional development activities is important to him in order to keep up with constantly changing issues and trends in education. “School board membership is highly rewarding,” says Boothe. “But it requires a significant commitment of time and energy.” Silver Creek CSD is grateful for Mr. Boothe’s service to our students and community. Silver Creek Central School District is spotlighting its Board of Education members during School Board Recognition Week (Oct. 18-22, 2021)! First up is GREG COLE, a longtime member and past president of the BOE. He has served consecutively since July 2013 as a dedicated volunteer for our Black Knight family. Here’s a little more about him: He and his wife, Judy, first moved to Silver Creek in 1984. As a professional educator he spent 32 years as a classroom instructor of Career and Technical Education for Erie 2 Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES. He retired from BOCES in 2016. He presently serves as an adjunct lecturer for the The State University of New York at Fredonia’s Department of Computer and Information Sciences. He teaches courses in Data Networking, Cybersecurity, Management Information Systems, and Web Programming. He and Mrs. Cole are active in the community. They have three adult children and all them graduated from Silver Creek Schools and SUNY colleges. INSPIRING VOLUNTEERISM He knows that public education can prepare all students for successful careers. As a high school senior, he had the opportunity to go to Brazil as an exchange student. Brazil did not have free public education. If a family could not afford to pay tuition for their children then those children would not be able to attend school. “I saw firsthand how important education is to our career opportunities and to our quality of life,” says Cole. “We, in America, are blessed and fortunate to have free and appropriate public education for all children. It is for this reason that I am inspired to volunteer my time to ensure that all of the students in our district are receiving a high-quality education.” INFLUENCE & OVERSIGHT School board members take on one of the most important citizen responsibilities: overseeing the education of the community's youth. Behind the scenes, the life of a school board member can be very rewarding. “I enjoyed presenting with Superintendent Todd Crandall at the 2019 New York State School Boards Convention about ‘Designing a Successful Capital Project and Vote,’ " says Cole. “I also appreciated the support that I received from the other Silver Creek BOE members who were in attendance there.” GETTING INVOLVED Being a school board member requires a commitment of time and effort. Silver Creek Central School District held a dedication ceremony recently (Sept. 23, 2021) marking the end of the third phase of its now-completed 2018 Capital Project. The expansive improvements – which included an upgrade of its communications system, implementation of LED lighting, the addition of sidewalks, expanded parking, a remodeled band entrance, the addition of three bus bays in the transportation garage, a new pole barn and more -- were approved by voters in March 2018. Board of Education President Stephen Boothe, Vice President Martha Howard and members Matthew Bogosian, Gregory Cole, Jerry Cross, Marjorie Foxton and Scott Pulver were on hand to commemorate the completion of one of the major aspects of the project – a six-classroom addition at Silver Creek Elementary that took nearly two years to finish. In addition, Jacob Mountain, Architect/Architectural Designer with Clark Patterson Lee, and owners’ representative Tim Brunswick, who oversaw the coordination of the project for the district, attended. Please join us on September 30th for Orange Shirt Day. It is an annual awareness campaign that originated in Canada. The main goal is to raise awareness about the impact of the Indian Residential School systems as well as promote the concept of “Every Child Matters.” The Orange Shirt Day campaign was launched in 2013 by Phyllis Jack Webstad, a residential school survivor. On her first day at school, Phyllis had her new orange shirt taken away from her and she never saw it again.
